The following is a note from FlySafair's Chief Marketing Officer, Kirby Gordon, with regard to the fact that FlySafair is currently not providing any on board catering services:
FlySafair commenced post-lockdown operations on 15 June 2020. During this early period there was a restriction placed on airlines with regard to the provision, and sale, of on-board catering services. While catering has been reintroduced on flights in South Africa by other carriers, FlySafair has decided to continue to not offer catering, rather urging customers to keep their face masks on over their noses and mouths as far as possible.
In-flight catering on domestic flights was initially disallowed in order to limit the spread of the Coronavirus. Having customers remove their face masks to eat and drink poses a risk for the virus to spread, as does the need to touch common surfaces when it comes to serving food and drink as well as potentially taking payments for the same.
A great deal of research has been done on how safe it is to travel on aircraft during the Covid-19 pandemic. The environment within the confined cabin compartments is very carefully regulated and conditioned with air being filtered and refreshed every 2 - 3min. All of this research has been premised on individuals wearing cloth face masks properly over the nose and mouth while travelling.
As we see a surge in infection again, we at FlySafair believe that it remains vital that we stay as true to our infection prevention efforts as we were on our first day of post-lockdown operations. In the spirit of that intention, FlySafair has decided to forego the revenue from on-board catering services through this holiday period in favour of promoting mask wearing compliance and a safe flying environment.
Water is, and will remain, available on request for passengers in need of it. We also strongly advise customers living with diabetes to ensure that they have snacks with them should they be needed. Customers are allowed to bring drinks (non-alcoholic), and food on board with them, but we strongly encourage that these be enjoyed on the ground before or after travel.
Lastly, we'd like to thank our customers for their understanding. We appreciate that it's lovely to sit back on a flight with a beverage and a snack to pass the time, and we look forward to a point where we feel that it is safe to offer you that service once again. We also salute you for your on-going support and understanding when it comes to the sometimes uncomfortable wearing of face masks for the duration of your travel. Together we will overcome this virus.
